Since its creation in 1984, the Roc d'Azur has gradually established itself as the benchmark event in the mountain biking world. Born from a simple competition among enthusiasts, the Roc has evolved to bring together thousands of participants from around the world every year. Based at the Fréjus water sports centre since 1997, the Roc d’Azur now offers a wide range of disciplines and courses to cater to all bike enthusiasts. Much more than just a mountain bike gathering, the Roc d’Azur is now the meeting place for cycling in all its forms. For its 40th edition, now under the name Roc d’Azur CIC, the event promises exciting new features while celebrating four decades of challenges, adventure, and outdoor fun.

An exhibitor village for enthusiasts

The Roc d’Azur is not just about bike events; it is also a free village open to everyone, every day from 10 am to 7 pm. Every year, nearly 300 exhibitors showcase a wide range of bikes, accessories, clothing, and even dietary products. It is a unique opportunity to interact with brands and tourism destinations around cycling and outdoor activities. It is also a privileged moment to meet the elite present at the stands in contact with the public.

What's new for 2024?

For several years, the Roc d’Azur has been constantly evolving and welcoming new disciplines. The program offers an unprecedented range of activities and a vast choice of events for everyone to have a unique experience.

Road cycling makes its way into the Roc!

This year's big novelty is the arrival of road cycling at the Roc d’Azur. On Sunday, 13 October, road cycling will make its debut with a 130.9-kilometre course with a 1,900-metre elevation gain. The route offers a journey into the heart of the splendours of the Var hinterland. Between the small roads winding through the famous red rocks and the crossings of typical villages in the region with their terraced houses clinging to the hillside, all listed among the most beautiful villages in France, this first edition of the Ekoi Cyclo Roc is likely to leave a lasting impression. This new format more than ever marks the event as the meeting point for all bikes.

Even more gravel!

Gravel riding, part of the Roc d’Azur program since 2016, continues to grow in the event's calendar. For this 40th edition, the Canyon Rando Gravel Origin will make its debut on Thursday, 10 October. This new 70-kilometre course with a 2,200-metre elevation gain will start from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, where, in 1984, during the first edition, the 7 riders set off around Stéphane Hauvette. A gravel course that goes back to the roots of the Roc to remind us of its rich history.

The flagship event of the Roc d’Azur will take place on Sunday morning. With 55.1 kilometres and a 1,420-metre elevation gain, the Roc's MTB race reveals a rolling and technical course. The Var terrain will put machines and tyres to the test. The abrasive surface is both rocky and sandy. The course offers a succession of steep climbs and technical, rolling descents to tackle the 1420-metre elevation gain!

Which MTB to choose for the Roc d’Azur?

It is not always easy to choose between a hardtail MTB and a full-suspension MTB.

For your participation in the flagship event of the Roc d’Azur and given the technical nature of the terrain, a full-suspension bike will be the ideal companion. This type of bike offers better grip during climbs and will allow you to descend more easily.

Which tyres to mount for the Roc d’Azur?

The terrains of the Var and the Maures massif are known for their abrasive side. To participate in the Roc d’Azur, we recommend using tubeless tyres with a reinforced casing. Depending on the brands, here are the technologies to look for:

  • For Hutchinson, choose a tyre with Hardskin technology.
  • For Maxxis, choose a tyre with EXO protection technology.
  • For Schwalbe, choose a tyre that incorporates Super Ground technology.
  • For Continental, choose a tyre with Protection technology.

Opt for a tyre width of at least 2.25 up to 2.4 for more comfort.

Three tips to succeed in your Roc d’Azur

  • Check your bike before the start
  • Remember to check the key points of your bike: brakes, pads, chain condition, gear shifting, water bottle holder attachment, repair kit (inner tube, CO2 cartridge, tubeless plug…). These small details will ensure you race in good conditions with operational equipment.

  • Pay attention to your nutrition
  • A mountain bike race requires a lot of energy. It is important to make sure you arrive at the start line well-fed. Have a good breakfast and remember to eat and drink enough carbohydrates the day before. During the race, take a gel every 40 minutes and remember to drink every 20 minutes, preferably drinks containing electrolytes. To make sure you don't forget, you can set alerts on your GPS.

  • Don't start too fast
  • It's easy to get carried away with the excitement of the start. Stay focused on your sensations and try to find your rhythm without paying attention to what is happening around you.
